Cancer doesn’t discriminate and comes in different forms. Researchers across the world selflessly continue to study how to minimize the damage it causes or hopefully discover a cure.
The disease not only impacts the victim, but the family as well.
Bill Outlaw knows all too well.
In 2012, the former East Carolina baseball player contracted leukemia and the journey opened his eyes to the challenges he and his family faced. Today, he is in remission.
“We are all scared of the ‘C’ word,” Outlaw said. “So when we are told, we think the worst and then we have to go through the treatment plan. It is different for all, but equally difficult.”
One year after his recovery, he founded the Outlaw Foundation.
Since its inception, the organization holds an annual 5K run (3.1 miles) and one-mile walk that has raised more than $800,000 to provide financial assistance to individuals and families affected by cancer.
This year’s event is March 11 at Carver Elementary School.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the registration fee is $30. The 5K walk begin at 9:30 a.m. The two routes take walkers and runners down scenic roads around the school.
Last year’s event drew nearly 250 participants.
“All proceeds help as many families as possible through our foundation,” Outlaw said. “It is a way for other people and businesses to raise money to assist families that are going through this difficult time. It is so special to be able to give hope and monetary assistance when they need it the most.
“God wanted me to start this to help others, and with the help of our gracious community and all of the volunteers at our event, we have been able to accomplish God’s will. I feel so much better when I give versus receiving.”
Pre-registration is closed.
