CLINTON — University of Mount Olive (UMO) senior Britni Register, a Veterinary Bioscience major from Clinton, has completed a 10-week internship with Prestage Farms in Sampson County. This opportunity provided Register with invaluable hands-on experience in the agricultural sector, particularly in the swine division, where she applied her knowledge and skills to real-world farming operations.
Register, who is expected to graduate in the fall of 2024, has always been drawn to the agricultural industry. Growing up in a community surrounded by farms and animals, she knew from a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, specifically as a large animal veterinarian. Her time at UMO and this internship experience have further cemented her career aspirations.
“I’ve always been passionate about working with animals,” Register explained. “Growing up in Sampson County, where there’s a significant need for large animal veterinarians, I realized I wanted to fill that gap and provide my community with the care it deserves.”
Internshipinsights
During her time at Prestage Farms, Register worked primarily on a sow farm but was given the opportunity to explore various facets of the company’s operations, including nursery farms, finishing farms, production plants, feed mills, and turkey farms. She also gained insights into the veterinary lab, where she was able to apply what she had learned at UMO in a practical setting.
“My internship with Prestage was a comprehensive experience,” said Register. “Each day brought new challenges and learning opportunities. Whether it was caring for the animals, maintaining cleanliness, or administering treatments, I was constantly applying the knowledge I gained from my courses at UMO.”
A typical day for Register began early in the morning, often starting as early as 3:45 a.m. The demanding schedule taught Register about time management, resilience, and the importance of dedication to animal care.
Academic and community involvement
Register’s academic journey at UMO has been marked by achievements and involvement in various clubs and organizations. She has been a part of the Animal Science Club, received recognition on the Dean’s List, and maintained a presence in the Honors Program throughout her time at the University. Additionally, Register has been an active member of her community, attending Clinton Community Church, where she is part of the volleyball team, and serving as a coach for the Clinton Tigers Christian cheer team.
“The support from my family, church, and UMO has been instrumental in my success,” Register shared. “Balancing my roles as a student, intern, and mother has been challenging, but my support system has kept me motivated.”
Future aspirations
Looking ahead, Register plans to apply to the veterinary program at NC State University to continue her education and become a large animal veterinarian. Her long-term goal is to open her own veterinary practice in her hometown, providing much-needed care to the community’s farm animals.
“The internship at Prestage opened my eyes to the diverse opportunities within the agricultural industry,” Register stated. “While my heart is set on veterinary medicine, I now know there are other paths I can explore. I’m grateful for the experiences that have prepared me for my future career.”
Register’s story is a testament to her dedication, passion, and determination to succeed. Her journey at UMO and her internship at Prestage Farms have equipped her with the skills and knowledge to significantly impact the veterinary field and her community.
Gratitude and acknowledgments
Register extends her heartfelt thanks to the Prestage family and all those who made her internship a valuable learning experience. She also expresses gratitude to her professors at UMO for their dedication to her education and growth as a future veterinarian.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey, especially the donors who made my scholarships possible,” Register said. “Your generosity has allowed me to pursue my dream without the burden of excessive student debt. I am truly grateful.”
