MOUNT OLIVE — Vinesha Briggs, a 21-year-old exercise science major, is making waves in the athletic and academic arenas. Set to graduate in December 2024, Briggs has already built an impressive resume filled with triumphs in track and field, academic excellence, and entrepreneurial success.
Early life and inspiration
Growing up in Clayton, Briggs was often teased for her slender frame, but this did not deter her. Instead, it fueled her passion for fitness and sports. Starting track at the age of eight, she set her sights on earning a college scholarship, training under the guidance of her father and the Evolution track club. Despite initial challenges, she excelled in the long jump, setting records in Johnston County during middle school.
At 15, Briggs faced a significant hurdle when she underwent back surgery for scoliosis. Her recovery was swift, and she returned stronger, competing in indoor and outdoor track seasons, eventually participating in Outdoor Nationals with New Balance.
Academic and athletic journey
Briggs high school years were marked by perseverance. Balancing school, training, and personal challenges, she nearly quit track during her junior and senior years. However, the interest from college recruiters reignited her passion, leading to an exceptional senior year with multiple state-level achievements.
Choosing the University of Mount Olive for its supportive environment and strong academic and athletic programs, Briggs has flourished. As an exercise science major, she has maintained a 3.7 GPA while continuing to excel in track. Her sophomore year was particularly noteworthy, with significant improvements in her 400m performance and participation in national championships.
Professional aspirations and personal training business
In addition to her studies and athletics, Briggs launched her personal training business, VB.FITT, in May 2022. Despite initial nerves, her business thrived, and she now manages both in-person and online clients, offering personalized training programs and promoting her services through social media.
Working part-time at Clayton Fitness and Teen Xtreme in Raleigh, Briggs gains valuable hands-on experience in the fitness industry. She plans to expand her business, establish her own training facility, and make personal training her primary career. “Growing up, I struggled with being confident in my body, and working out in the gym significantly improved my perception of myself,” she stated. “I want to help others achieve personal fitness success.”
UMO impact
Briggs credits the University of Mount Olive for providing the connections, knowledge, and opportunities that have shaped her journey. The hands-on internships and supportive faculty have prepared her for a successful fitness career.
As she prepares for her final semester, Briggs reflects on her transformation at UMO, from a shy, determined athlete to a confident, aspiring entrepreneur. She looks forward to obtaining nationally accredited personal training certifications and continuing to inspire others through her work. “UMO has provided me with multiple opportunities to meet new people and build connections,” she said. “Without the connections I have made from attending UMO, I do not know how things would look for me right now.”
Briggs’ story is a testament to resilience, passion, and determination. Her journey from a small-town girl to a thriving student-athlete and entrepreneur exemplifies the transformative power of education and perseverance.
