Hubert James Thornton

FUQUAY VARINA — Mr. Hubert James Thornton, 87, of 9705 Lake Wheeler Road (formerly of Clinton) died at Transitions Life Care Center in Raleigh Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023.

A graveside service will be held at 1 pm on Friday, Aug. 19, 2023, at the Thornton Family Cemetery in Faison, NC with the Rev. Chuck Woodruff officiating.

Born in 1936 in Sampson County, Mr. Thornton was the son of the late Andrew Goodrich and Tempie Boyette Thornton. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and retired service technician with Copier Sales & Service with Gray-Creech (Icon). He was a member of the Catawba Springs Christian Church and a widower of Nellie Carrow Thornton. Mr. Thornton loved to be outdoors, doing anything in his garden or “tinkering” outside. He also loved to paint throughout his life and do crafts. He was a very talented man and could do pretty much anything he set his mind to. He even loved to sew and bake and because of this he insisted on making his daughter’s wedding dress and her wedding cake. During Christmas, it was tradition that he made candies for everyone, and was known around town for his fruitcakes, fruitcake cookies and sausage balls. He was truly a “jack of all trades”.Hubert had many passions in his life, but none were greater than his family. He loved them dearly, and they loved him in return. He will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his daughter, Belinda Flynn, and husband, Scott of Fuquay Varina; two sisters, Wilma Vaughn of Faison, Sybil Jones of Selma; two brothers, Jimmy Carter of Benson and Billy Carter of Mt Olive; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Carrow Thornton; three sisters: Hazel Martin, Daisy Oursler, and Mildred Lollis and three brothers: Leon Thornton, Wilbert and Kenneth Thornton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideons International or Catawba Springs Christian Church: 6801 Ten-Ten Road, Apex, N.C. 27539.
