The Arts Council of Wayne County members participated in Arts Day held in the spring.
Arts Day, hosted by Arts North Carolina, is a two-day event held in Raleigh. It is a gathering of artists and arts leaders from across the state to convene as peers to advocate for the arts to elected leaders in the N.C. General Assembly.
“I was honored to represent our organization and share all the wonderful things happening in our community at Arts Day this year,” said Anna Hinson, Arts Council of Wayne County programs director.
“Thank you to Arts North Carolina for providing conference scholarships for two artists and one art teacher from our county.”
Representatives from the Arts Council of Wayne County were able to meet with N.C. state Senator Buck Newton and N.C. House Representative John Bell of Goldsboro, House majority leader, while in Raleigh.
The Arts Council of Wayne County representatives advocated for these main legislative asks: $3.5 million recurring increase for all N.C. Arts Councils in all 100 counties; H136, Arts Proficiency High School Diploma Endorsement; H498, Provide Music & Visual Arts Instructors to all K-5 students in North Carolina; and $1.5 million for A+ Schools of North Carolina over two or three years.
“Meeting with Sen. Newton and Rep. Bell was a highlight of Arts Day 2023 for me,” said Chretien Dumond, Arts Council of Wayne County board member.
“Walking in the House majority leader’s office, it was very apparent of the support and appreciation for the arts from our elected officials, by the display of student artwork from Wayne Community College and Rosewood Elementary, it was a pleasure to see.”
Arts Day 2024 dates have yet to be released, but if you’d like to get involved and support the arts in your community email Hinson at anna@artsinwayne.org.
