The most-decorated, long-distance runner in Gators’ history, Cabrera recently finished 26th overall in the 2023 NC High School Athletic Association Class 2A state cross country championship meet. He claimed the 2023 East 2A Regional individual title just days after winning the Neuse Six 2A crown. Cabrera’s personal record is 16 minutes, 30 seconds in the 5k.
Gators head coach Ian Combest said, “James is the single-best runner that Spring Creek has ever produced and it shows in every way. As a teammate, he encourages, guides, competes with and is a good man to all the other runners. As his coach, he always listens, works hard, wants more work, educates himself, asks questions and is constantly passionate about being a runner. In my three years at Spring Creek, our goal was to build a successful program. By going to states all three years, two of those years because of James, we built the reputation we needed to create a program in three years rather than five years. ”
