WILSON — Southern Wayne senior Ta’Niyah Glaspie and sophomore Jy’Asha Cousins each claimed an individual title during the recently-contested 2023 Quad County 3A outdoor track and field championship meet.
Glaspie, who has committed to UNC Pembroke, emerged as the 200-meter dash champion in 25.28 seconds. She avenged a loss to Fike sophomore Tynasia Emory, who edged Glaspie by .06 seconds to take the 100 dash gold medal.
Emory placed second in the 200.
Cousins collected the gold medal in the 300-meter hurdles and finished runner-up to Charles B. Aycock freshman Rachel Key-White in the 100 hurdles.
SW senior Elaina Lane earned a silver medal (second place) with a mark of 16 feet, 4.5 inches in the long jump. Key-White won the event.
The Saints placed second in the girls’ 4×1 relay.
Iyanah Southerland wound up fifth in both the discus and shot put. Senior Mia Glaspie-Leach ended up sixth in the 400. Katie Daniels posted an eighth-place time in the 800 and was 14th overall in the one-mile run (1,600 meters).
“We have some injuries we’re dealing with [to] some key runners, so that may have played a part [in the meet],” said SW coach Takisha Vann. “But the kids stepped up where needed.”
On the boys’ side, the Saints were fifth in the 4×4 relay.
Senior multi-sport athlete Adam Cain was sixth in the discus and 11th in the shot put. Malachi Bass, who signed to play football at Elizabeth City State, secured eighth place in the highly-competitive triple jump.
Manesse Remedor and Jeremy Whitley competed in the 300 hurdles. Senior Daniel Weeks battled stout competition in the 1,600, while Jymeer Jones and Naeem Longmire both participated in the long jump.
Fike distance specialist Erin Pope seized gold medals in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 events.
CBA’s Austin Sawkiw emerged victorious in the boys’ 110 and 300 hurdles.
Senior Harper Clark helped lead West Johnston to the boys’ team title with individual triumphs in the 800 and 1,600 runs. The Wildcats topped their QCC rivals in the 4×2, 4×4 and 4×8 relays en route to 158.5 points.
