Tigers blank Bulldogs in soccer

TEACHEY — James Kenan collected long-awaited and well-deserved result on the soccer pitch Monday evening.

Even better, it came against a county nemesis.

Robert Ordones and Ronald Ramirez punched in one goal apiece during a 2-0 conquest of reigning East Central 2A champion Wallace-Rose Hill.

“Both teams played very well and strong,” JK head coach Mitchell Quinn said. “[I’m] very proud of our defensive performance. Hopefully, this will be a big confidence booster. But at the same time, I don’t want it to be a situation where we become over confident.

“The conference has great teams and Wallace is not the only good team in the conference. We have to remember that and expect a tough match each time we play. Hopefully, we will feed off the win and continue to play good, solid soccer.”

Since 2011, the Tigers hold a 12-11-1 edge. Before Monday, the arch rivals had battled to a 1-1-1 record on the pitch.

James Kenan (9-2-0 overall, 5-0-0 ECC) entertains East Duplin on Wednesday, while Wallace-Rose Hill (11-2-2, 3-1) entertains Southwest Onslow on Thursday.

Jennette, Aycock shoot well

SMITHFIELD — Kenzi Aycock turned in a season-low, nine-hole round during a Quad County 3A girls’ golf match contested Monday afternoon at the Country Club of Johnston County

Regan Stribble paced the Saints with a 50, while Chloe Sullivan turned in a 53. Southern Wayne compiled a three-player, team total of 167 — good enough for fifth place overall among the eight competing teams.

Fike shot a season-low, team score of 130. West Johnston finished nine strokes back, followed by South Johnston (151) and Wilson Hunt (161).

West Johnston’s Jenna Underwood — again — earned medalist honors with a season-best 38. Fike’s Loulie Harrison logged a 40. Teammates Peyton Durham and Kinsley Hill each posted a 45.

Kennedy Mack of West Johnston rounded out the top five with 48.
