CALYPSO — Holden Williams emerged victorious during his first start on the mound during North Duplin’s 11-2, non-conference conquest of county baseball rival James Kenan.

Williams permitted one hit, allowed one walk and retired three Tigers on strikeouts. The right-hander faced 11 batters in three innings.

Garris Warren hurled two innings four-hit, four-strikeout relief. Tanner Kornegay logged three strikeouts and held James Kenan hitless in two innings of work.

The Rebels’ defense turned in an error-free performance. Catcher Austin Duff logged 10 putouts behind the plate. Warren recorded three putouts. Hunt Pate, Noa Quintanilla and Esteban Santos Clark posted two putouts apiece.

North Duplin mustered just four hits – two by Duff (three RBI) and one each from Pate (three RBI) and Wesley Holmes. The Rebels profited from 10 walks and six Kenan defensive miscues.

Hayden Miller supplied an RBI.

Williams drew four walks, while Tanner Kornegay received three free passes. Williams stole four bases. Clark and Pate swiped two bases apiece. Branden Reyna and Quintanilla each had one stolen base.

Cal Avent paced James Kenan with two hits. Eli Avent and Mason Grady recorded one hit apiece.

Wyatt Barbour endured the mound loss.

North Duplin (2-0 overall) recorded its fourth consecutive win over the Tigers and 21st overall in their last 25 meetings. Weather permitting, the Rebels hit the road Friday at East Central 2A member South Lenoir.

Saints’ game postponed

DUDLEY — Late-evening inclement weather Wednesday evening forced the postponement of Southern Wayne’s home baseball game against Rosewood.

The teams will play Friday on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex diamond. First pitch is 5 p.m.

The Saints’ originally-scheduled game against Northern Nash has been cancelled due to the basketball playoffs.

Panthers trip up Saints

DUDLEY — Aaron Whiting collected Southern Wayne’s lone point during an 8-1 loss to Quad County 3A boys’ tennis foe West Johnston.

Whiting prevailed 6-0, 6-3 over senior Gavi Henley at No. 2 singles.

Saints head coach David Van Dyke selected Whiting as player-of-the-match. The senior is 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles.

Newcomer Tyshawn Melvin dropped a nail-biting, three-set affair at No. 3 singles. The sophomore claimed the first 7-6 (3), but West Johnston freshman Leighton Scholz won the second set 6-3 and escaped 12-10 in the third-set tiebreaker.

West Johnston owned a 5-1 edge after singles play and swept the doubles courts.

Southern Wayne (1-1 overall, 1-1 QCC) begins a two-match road swing next Tuesday at Hunt. First serve is 3:30 p.m.
