SEVEN SPRINGS — Multi-sport athlete Emily Williams and cross country/track standout James Cabrera received femal and male athlete of the year recognition, respectively, during Spring Creek’s season-ending sports awards ceremony.
Williams earned All-Neuse Six 2A honors in volleyball, girls’ basketball and girls’ tennis. The junior helped lead the Gators’ softball team to an appearance in the N.C. High School Athletic Association state playoffs.
Cabrera rewrote the cross country and track record books, much to the delight of head coach Ian Combest.
The distance specialist was named to the All-Neuse Six 2A squad in cross country and excelled during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. His indoor campaign included Neuse Six 2A titles in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
Cabrera claimed Neuse Six 2A crowns in the 1,600 and 3,200 on the outdoor track scene. He won Mideast 2A Regional gold medals in the same two events and qualified for the NCHSAA state championships.
In late March, Cabrera emerged as the 1,600 and 3,200 winner in the annual Wayne County Track and Field Championship meet.
Spring Creek also shared the 2022 Neuse Six 2A regular-season title with North Johnston in boys’ soccer. The Gators (17-5-2 overall) advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA playoffs.
Since its inception, Spring Creek has collected 10 league championships in boys’ soccer while competing as a member of the Carolina 1A, East Central 2A and Neuse Six 2A conferences.
