GOLDSBORO — As part of the 2023-24 budget planning process, Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) Superintendent Dr. David Lewis released his proposed budget during a Board of Education special called meeting. The proposed $223 million budget focuses on the following board priorities while working to maintain a balanced budget:
• Safety & Security and Establishing district-wide standards
• Warm and inviting facilities (Cleanliness of campuses, exterior appearances, removal of unused or unsightly buildings, etc.)
• Sustainability beyond ESSER funding (Academics, programming, technology, etc.)
• Employee benefits and Retention & retainment opportunities (Increased supplements, professional development or cross training opportunities for professional growth, etc.)
• Efficient building utilization (Student reassignment, renovations or new school construction, etc.)
• Continued conservative fiscal practices and Building of fund balance
“Our budget development process began several months ago,” added Dr. Lewis. “We looked at staffing formulas, early budgeting projections, and student allotments. We’ve also met with principals and directors to get their input on budget needs and priorities.”
The superintendent’s proposed budget can be reviewed on the district’s website, www.waynecountyschools.org. A link has also been provided for members of the public to provide input about the proposed budget. The comments deadline is Thursday, April 13.
“We encourage families, staff and the public to take the time to review the budget materials,” said Dr. Lewis. “Suggestions are welcomed by the Board and district leaders as we work to finalize next year’s budget.
A copy of the budget will also be available at the district’s Central Services located on Royall Avenue. Members of the public can review the proposed budget during regular business hours. During the district’s Spring Break, the WCPS Central Services will be closed to the public on Friday, April 7 and Friday April 14.
The board will finalize its budget for approval at its regularly scheduled board meeting on May 1.
