MOREHEAD CITY — The offseason begins. Southern Wayne concluded its 2023 wrestling campaign during the NC High School Athletic Association east 3A regionals contested at West Carteret on Saturday.

Eight grapplers combined for a 7-16 record on the mat.

Junior heavyweight Eli Hulet posted three wins. He dropped his opening-round match to Charles B. Aycock sophomore Jadon Best. Three wins later, Hulet collided with Franklinton’s Landon Michael in the consolation semifinals.

Michael prevailed 6-0 and earned a state-tournament berth.

Hulet concluded the year 31-10.

Lamontez White ended up 2-2 at 220 pounds. He pinned Currituck County sophomore Andrew Elliott in the first round. Northern Nash’s Sammy Huddleston dropped White into the consolation bracket.

White (26-11) eliminated North Brunswick’s Sebastion Hernandez and endured a season-ending loss to Christian Hardy of West Brunswick in the consolation quarterfinals.

Freshman Omar Soler Sanchez and Antonio Solice each picked up a win at 103 and 160 pounds, respectively. Sanchez ended the year 31-15.

Mia Glaspie-Leach (113 pounds), Josiah Bell (126), Amari Thomas (138) and Narderon Cox (170) also competed in the double-elimination event.

Southern Wayne scored 24 team points.
