A local contractor has won the bid to complete the town’s sidewalk project.

Jammie Royall, town manager, said he and Henry Fulghum, owner/operator of Concrete Specialties of Mount Olive, reached an agreement last week.

Fulghum will receive $20,000 to complete one block of work from Franklin to Nelson streets. The sidewalk will be installed on the east side of Church Street and should be finished by the end of June, according to Royall.

Engineers continue to work on second-phase issues, which include six easements that need to be obtained. Once resolved, Fulghum will construct a sidewalk on the east side of Church Street from Nelson to Hillsboro streets.

Royall anticipates that phase will be completed in the fall.

“I don’t think there will be any problems obtaining the needed easements — especially when people see the first phase already underway and what it actually does to improve the property,” Royall said.
