GOLDSBORO — Southern Wayne claimed first in the boys’ 200 medley relay and Carlos Alvarez emerged victorious in the 200 free during a season-ending, county swim meet contested at the Family Y on Thursday evening.

The relay quartet of Daniel Weeks, Evan Williams, Drew Bryan and Dylan Daniels combined for a time of 2 minutes, 9.73 seconds in the B.G. Darden Natatorium pool.

Alvarez logged a time of 3:13.42 in the 200 free. He swam the opening leg of the Saints “B” team, which ended up third in 2:44.25. Joining Alvarez were Thomas Weaver, Jonah Reyes and Matthew Blizzard.

Bryan placed second in the 50 free and 100 butterfly.

Weeks took fourth in the 50 free.

Daniels finished runner-up behind Goldsboro’s Daniel Zou in the 100 free and touched the wall sixth in the 50 free.

One of six SW seniors, Daniels swam the opening leg of the 200 free relay that wound up second behind Princeton with a time of 2:03.45. He was joined by Weaver, Weeks and Bryan.

The “B” group of Reyes, Blizzard, Alvarez and Williams filed a third-place time of 2:21.22 in the 200 free relay. Reyes took third behind Daniels in the 100 free.

Williams and Weaver finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Southern Wayne captured first in the boys’ team points race with 88 and shared third place with Charles B. Aycock in combined team points with 91.

Sarah Sutton, the Saints’ lone female competitor, wound up 12th in the 100 free and 17th in the 50 free.

After completion of the multi-heat 50 free race, Southern Wayne’s seniors were recognized – Sutton, Daniels, Bryan, Weeks, Williams and Weaver.

Saints grapple on road

HOLLYWOOD – Southern Wayne’s trio of Omar Soler Sanchez, Lamontez White and heavyweight Eli Hulet combined for a 6-0 record during a season-ending, multi-team wrestling dual held at D.H. Conley High School on Thursday evening.

Sanchez (29-12 overall) earned a forfeit against South Central and pinned DHC 106-pounder Andrew Bullard.

White returned after a lengthy absence due to illness. The 220-pounder also received a forfeit against South Central and pinned DHC’s Dontae Sutton.

Hulet pinned South Central’s Caleb Stahl and DHC’s Tucker Jackson.

Narderon Cox and Antonio Solice each collected a pin against South Central. Oswaldo Quiroz drew a forfeit against DHC.

Southern Wayne (9-20 overall) endured team defeats against South Central (36-42) and Conley (18-66). Coach Tori King’s grapplers were a combined 6-15 in contested individual bouts against their former conference foes.

The Saints return home Saturday for the second annual Quad County 3A wrestling championships. Opening-round matches begin at 9 a.m.

Rebels shine in meet

SALEMBURG — North Duplin swept the boys’ relays and claimed three individual victories during a Carolina 1A Conference indoor track meet held Wednesday afternoon at Lakewood High School.

The Rebels won the 4×2, 4×4 and 4×8 relays.

Marcus Hill took first in the triple jump (38 feet, 0 inches), second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.2 seconds) and third in the long jump (17-4).

Luis Aviles bested the competition in the 500 run (1:16), while Luke Holland won the 3,200 in 13:42. Holland placed second in the 1,600.

Khamari Leak claimed second in the long jump.

On the girls’ side, distance specialist Baker Sumner turned in a runner-up performance in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600.

Valencya Stemmler placed second in the 300, while Tristen Stemmler ended up fourth in the 55 dash. Ivet Campos crossed the finish line fourth in the 1,000.

ND took second in both the 4×4 and 4×8 relays, and fourth in the 4×2.
