KINSTON – Southern Wayne couldn’t overcome 24 turnovers in a 49-31 loss to unbeaten Wayne Country Day on day three of the 2022 Greater Neuse FCA Winter Classic girls’ basketball tournament.
WCDS won the Red Pool with a 3-0 record.
The Saints, the 2021 Classic champs, managed just nine first-half points.
Sophomore point guard Nevaeh Hines-Bass paced Southern Wayne’s offense with 14 points, including 11 in the second half.
Ta’Niyah Glaspie contributed five points and a team-leading 15 rebounds. Frontcourt mate Nygeria Thompson supplied six points and 11 rebounds.
Jamaiya Bass tallied five points and three rebounds.
As a team, Southern Wayne logged eight steals and shot a paltry 11 of 24 (45.8 percent) from the free throw line.
Greene Central won the White Pool, while New Bern dominated the Green Pool. Both teams finished 3-0.
Lenoir Community College played host to the 12-team event.
The Saints (7-3 overall) step back into Quad County 3A play Tuesday with a home contest against Wilson Hunt. The JV girls tip off at 3:45 p.m.
