“It’s fun for the whole family.” That’s how Steve Wiggins describes the Down Home Country Christmas Show, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20 in the Southern Bank Auditorium on the University of Mount Olive campus. Tickets are $20 each.
The Exchange Club of Mount Olive is sponsoring the show, with all proceeds going to the club to be used for various community-related programs, such as working toward the prevention of child abuse and providing scholarships.
Wiggins is a member of The Exchange Club, and he plays lead guitar and saxophone in Down Home Country. He describes the upcoming show as a “Myrtle Beach-Branson type show,” noting that Christmas music will be performed in both rock ‘n’ roll and country styles. “The end of the show will focus on the Savior and His birth,” Wiggins says.
Although this will be the first time Down Home Country has performed on behalf of The Exchange Club, the group has been together for almost three decades. “We have a lot of exceptional musicians in this group,” says Wiggins. “Curtis Lee is a five-time national fiddling champion, and a member of the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame. Tres Rich plays bass guitar for us; he’s a member of the Iowa Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame.”
In addition to music, the 90-minute show will feature comedy skits performed by Dixie Hicks and Roadkill Rufus.
