DUDLEY – — A five-run lead evaporated, but rain-soaked Southern Wayne pulled off a 7-6, season-opening victory over Goldsboro on the softball diamond Thursday evening.
The Saints presented new head coach Andy Sullivan his first “W.”
“We played very hard tonight against a talented Goldsboro High team,” said Sullivan, who is the program’s sixth head coach in the past two decades.
“It was good seeing our girls get out and battle tonight, and fight until the very last out.”
Reagan Stribble threw a complete game and logged seven strikeouts inside the pitcher’s circle. Offensively, she batted 2-for-3 with a double.
Returning starter Gracie Kinston tripled twice in a 2-for-3 effort.
Weather permitting, Southern Wayne (1-0 overall) entertains county rival Spring Creek today. First pitch is 5 p.m.
