GOLDSBORO — Freshman Kely Barrios notched a hat trick (three goals) during Southern Wayne’s season-opening, 7-0 triumph over South Lenoir in girls’ soccer Monday evening.
Allya Segura collected two goals. Aracely Perez-Barrera and Ky’mora Stokes punched in one goal apiece.
Barrios, Stokes, Perez-Barrera, Angelica Quinta Venegas and Karen Flores Gonzalez each doled out one assist.
Goalie Amya Smith collected nine saves between the pipes.
Southern Wayne (1-0-0 overall) entertains county rival Goldsboro on Thursday. Kickoff is 6 p.m. on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex pitch.
Saints fall to Warriors
DUDLEY – Hudson Hulet earned a singles point and claimed a point with doubles mate Matt Blizzard during Southern Wayne’s sseason-opening, 7-2 loss to East Wake on Monday afternoon.
It was also the Quad County 3A opener for both boys’ tennis teams.
Seeded No. 4, Hulet turned back the Warriors’ Kadin Weaver 6-0, 6-2. He and Blizzard upended Noah Paschke-Jackson Bailey 8-1 at the No. 2 doubles slot.
East Wake secured the match with a 5-1 edge in singles.
Southern Wayne (0-1 overall, 0-1 QCC) returns home Thursday to face county rival Eastern Wayne. First serve is 3:30 p.m.
Devilpups blank Rebels
CALYPSO – Lejeune punched in two second-half goals and shut out North Duplin, 3-0, at H.E. Grubbs Field on Monday evening.
It was the season opener for both teams.
The Rebels (0-1-0 overall) entertain South Lenoir on Friday. Kickoff is 5 p.m.
