DUDLEY — Mount Olive Rotary Club members hope Mother Nature doesn’t change the weather forecast this week.

Golfers should expect sunny skies and warm temperatures when the annual Cabin Fever Golf Tournament tees off Friday at Southern Wayne Country Club.

Play begins at noon.

“We are really happy to have this particular event because it gets people out of the house [and] on the golf course,” said Barbara Kornegay, the CFGT manager and Rotary secretary. “It’s good exercise and it’s for a good cause. I’m grateful to have a good [tournament] committee.

“We had a really good year last year considering we were just coming out of COVID. I think we will do well this year because we have plenty of teams.”

How about 30?

Broken up into threesomes, the teams are divided into three flights. Tournament organizer Sprunt Hill provides the rules and other information regarding the course prior to the customary shotgun start.

Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place teams in each flight. SWCC is providing pro shop gift cards for the winning participants. Putting and closest-to-the-pin contests are on tap.

Kornegay said community support has been outstanding. Not only have local businesses purchased either hole or tee flag sponsorships, they’ve also donated items for “goody bags” Rotary members plan to distribute to the golfers.

“[Sponsors] help us raise money through our Cabin Fever tournament because we use the funds to assist local people who face dire circumstances such as loss of home from a fire or a catastrophic illness,” Kornegay said.

“It’s Rotary’s way of ‘service to others.’”

The CFGT committee is comprised of Kornegay, Barbara Bryan (Rotary president), Al Southerland, Branny Vickory, Barton Baldwin, David Martin, Dave Thompson, Kelley Thwaite, Adam Wiggins, Lisa Dismore, Stephanie Voris, Jennifer Morgan and Kim Kornegay.
