WENDELL — Oh, sweet revenge.
Fueled from the disappointment of two regular-season losses to Fike, the Southern Wayne girls’ basketball team made the most of their third meeting Friday evening.
Nygeria Thompson and Ta’Niyah Glaspie each posted a double as the Saints claimed the inaugural 2023 Quad County 3A tournament title, 61-51, over the Golden Demons.
The 2022 tournament was not contested.
Thompson, a junior, cleared the glass for 16 rebounds and knocked down 12 points. A multi-sport athlete, Glaspie provided 13 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Sophomore point guard Nevaeh Hines-Bass torched Fike’s defense for 20 points. Fully recovered from a hairline nose fracture, she also pulled down four rebounds and three assists.
Collegiate recruit Jamaiya Bass supplied 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Elaina Lane collected six points and four rebounds.
The second-seeded Saints had four double-figure scorers for the first time this season.
