Trojan Beat: Seven sports in action all on the road; league basketball tournament starts Tuesday

The latest edition of Trojan Beat recaps a busy weekend of conference and regional activity involving seven sports at the University of the Mount Olive.

So, let’s get started:

Basketball

The 2021 eight-team Conference Carolinas tournament tips off Tuesday with quarterfinal-round games at the higher seeds.

On the men’s side, No. 7 seed University of Mount Olive (5-9 overall) travels to second-seeded Belmont Abbey (13-3). The teams split their regular-season series at Kornegay Arena on the UMO campus.

The sixth-seeded Trojan women (6-6) are the guests of third-seeded Emmanuel. The Lions swept the regular-season series in dominating fashion.

Baseball

CENTRAL, S.C. - Gunner Tolston mashed a pair of home runs as the No. 12-ranked Trojans launched Conference Carolinas play with a four-game sweep of Southern Wesleyan University.

Dialed in all weekend, the Trojans defeated SWU 11-3 and 4-0 on Saturday, and 5-3 and 8-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Right-hander Reed Parris earned his second decision in three mound starts with a two-hit, five-strikeout performance that lasted five innings.

Coastal Carolina University transfer Garrett McDaniels (1-0), Hunter Stevens (2-0) and Caleb Irwin (2-0) also triumphed on the bump. The quartet combined for 22 strikeouts in 15.7 innings of work. McDaniels was the most impressive, yielding just two hits with nine Ks during game two.

Offensively, the unbeaten Trojans cranked out 40 hits.

Tolston (three RBI), Blake McLean (five RBI) and Norfolk State transfer Stephen Baughn (severn RBI) each hit safely in all four games. Wayne County native Zack Smith, who started his collegiate career at UNC Charlotte, belted a home run.

UMO (7-0 overall, 4-0 CC) improved to 14-2 all-time against SWU since 2015. The Trojans return to Scarborough Field for a four-game series against King, that begins Saturday at noon.

Wrestling

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - Colby Teague dropped his opening-round match at 157 pounds, but bounced back to finish 4-2 in the 2021 NCAA Division II Super Regional contested Saturday at Emmanuel College.

A sophomore, Teague received an opening-round bye and fell to John Finnerty in the second round. He remained alive with a 7-6, tiebreaker over Belmont Abbey’s Matthew Sloan, which started a string of four consecutive wins.

Teague pinned King’s Dallas Boone in 5 minutes, 50 seconds. He scored a 6-2 decision over Lander senior Jauquin Olivas and pinned Coker’s Alex Miller in just 79 seconds. His day ended with a tech fall against Newberry’s Will Evans. 

In all, 10 UMO grapplers combined to claim 14 wins in the highly-contested regional. Hayden Waddell (133 pounds) and Jon Clack (197) each went 2-2. Waddell combined to pin four opponents.

Dylan Willman (149), Dmitri Naimi (165), Bryan Aragao (174) and heavyweight Jalyn McClammy collected one win apiece.

Women’s lacrosse

DUE WEST, S.C. - Zoe Daughtery and Shaelyn Yermal each filed a hat trick (three goals) on their respective stat sheets as UMO throttled Erskine, 24-6, in their Conference Carolinas affair.

Five players notched two goals apiece for the Trojans, who seized a commanding 10-1 lead 10 minutes after the initial face-off.

Now 1-1 on the season, UMO returns home Wednesday for a mid-afternoon match against Lander University. Game time is 3 p.m.

Men’s volleyball

ROYSTON, Ga. - Tobi Azeez led three UMO players in double figures with 25 kills during a come-from-behind 25-18, 22-25, 22-25, 30-28, 15-12 conquest of Conference Carolinas pest Emmanuel University.

Iyanu Adebisi and Luke Visgitis provided 12 and 10 kills, respectively, as the Trojans completed the regular-season sweep of the Lions. Visgitis hit an impressive .692 and posted a team-leading nine blocks.

Adebisi logged a team-high 19 digs, followed by Ethan Morales and Ryan Lynch with 12 each.

Morales and Jarrod Ferguson each spread 26 assists among six hitters. 

The Trojans and Lions combined for 136 kills and 147 digs.

UMO (7-1 overall, 6-1 CC) plays at Erskine today.

Women’s soccer

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - Reigning Conference Carolinas regular-season and tournament champion UMO exploded for three second-half goals and dispatched Southern Wesleyan, 4-0, at Pepsi Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Jaelyn Brown, Alex Baker (one assist), Sara Berglund and Samantha Hamrick each found the back of the net. Berglund converted her second penalty kick of the season.

Trojan goalies Nicole Solicito and Taylor Lewis combined for eight saves, and the shutout between the pipes.

UMO (2-0-0 overall, 2-0-0 CC) return to action March 14 at in-state rival Chowan University.

Men’s soccer

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - Alfie Pope logged a hat trick (three goals) as UMO hammered Southern Wesleyan, 12-0, on the Pepsi Stadium pitch Sunday afternoon.

Pedro Franca, Ethan Willie and Gabe Highfield punched in two goals apiece. Zac Harvey-Latham (two assists), Amin Ferreira and Ivan Ponce each notched one goal.

Spring Creek alum Kevin Avila doled out two assists.

UMO goalie Ethan Bunting (no saves) recorded a clean sheet between the pipes.

The Trojans (1-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 CC) continue their current three-game road swing March 7 at North Greenville U.

Women’s volleyball

ROYSTON, Ga. - Emmanuel University owned a decisive 56-31 advantage in total team kills and handed UMO a 25-17, 14-25, 25-20, 25-13 setback in Conference Carolinas play Sunday afternoon.

UMO hit .143 as a team.

Alyssa Jackson and Nicholle Yeo combined for 23 digs.

The Trojans visited Erskine today.
