The sidewalk design work has begun for installing sidewalks along a two-block stretch of South Church Street.
However, it will be sometime in the spring when the work actually begins for the sidewalks from Franklin to Hillsboro Street.
The sidewalks will be on the east side of the street.
The first survey stake went up last week, clearing the way for the beginning of the first phase of the project.
It carries an estimated cost of approximately $150,000. Town officials have already set that amount aside, the funds from Powell Aid money.
The project grew out of a bicycle and pedestrian study that was completed earlier this year.
Town manager Charles Brown said the long-range plan is for the sidewalk to continue along Hillsboro Street, west to South Center Street.
“This eventually will give residents in the Franklin, Nelson and Hillsboro Street areas a safe pedestrian route to South Center Street where they can access a sidewalk to downtown,” Brown said.
The work will be done with in-house labor from the town’s public works department.
