PREP ROUNDUP: SW soccer topples Smithfield-Selma

SMITHFIELD - Alex Marquez notched two goals and collected an assist during Southern Wayne’s 5-2 victory over Quad County 3A soccer rival Smithfield-Selma on Wednesday evening.

Cesar Espinoza, Demus Jean and Miguel Campuzano each provided one goal.

Abram Sanchez, Gavin Simons and Yeims Gomes each had one assist.

Goalie Joey Segura recorded 12 saves.

The Saints (9-6-0 overall, 5-6-0 QCC) entertain South Johnston today. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.

Gators eliminated

PRINCETON - Princeton handed Spring Creek a season-ending 25-8, 25-13, 25-13 loss in semifinal-round play of the Neuse Six 2A Conference volleyball tournament.

Senior Yaeli Espinosa stuffed her stat sheet with five kills, four digs, one block and two aces. Emily Williams contributed one kill, four assists, four digs and one ace.

Peyton Sullivan had one kill, four assists and one dig. Eda Ham logged one assist and one dig, while Gabby Sutton had two kills and one dig. Heather Alexander supplied one kill and one ace.

Sarah Hess had two digs, one block and one ace.

“We finished fourth in the conference with seven wins,” SC head coach Jannah Marriner said. “The girls showed a lot of improvement as the season progressed. With a young team, the future looks bright for Spring Creek volleyball.”

Rebels fall to Cougars

SALEMBURG - Starr Jaco distributed 12 assists during North Duplin’s season-ending, 3-1 loss to Neuse Charter in semifinal-round play of the Carolina 1A Conference volleyball tournament.

Junior libero Kasey Jones recorded 12 digs.

Addy Higginbotham played a solid floor game with four kills, three aces and five digs. Morgan McCoy provided five kills and three aces.

Reece Outlaw had seven kills and five digs.

Three seniors - Jaco, Logan Jones and McCoy - played their final game in a Rebels uniform.

North Duplin concluded the year 9-9 overall.

Wildcats blank Rebels

NEWTON GROVE - North Duplin attempted 10 shots on goal, but couldn’t scratch in the scorebook during a 1-0 loss to Hobbton on the Carolina 1A boys’ soccer scene Wednesday.

The Wildcats tallied a first-half goal and protected its lead with solid defense.

Rebels goalie Xander Mele recorded eight saves between the pipes.

North Duplin (4-8-0 overall, 4-5-0 Carolina) concludes regular-season play today at unbeaten Rosewood, which has clinched the regular-season championship and automatic bid to the state playoffs.

Beulaville defeats North Duplin MS

Beulaville knocked North Duplin from the unbeaten ranks, 33-13, in a middle school football game contested Wednesday afternoon.

Carrel Phillips posted one touchdown and one extra point for the Rebels, who dropped to 4-1 this season.

Austin Wolfe rushed for a TD.

North Duplin concludes regular-season play Oct. 27 at Wallace.
