PEMBROKE - Three Wayne County Post 11 pitchers combined for a two-hitter and 10 strikeouts during a 13-2, mercy-rule conquest of Hamlet Post 49 on Wednesday evening.
The traditional Senior Legion baseball powerhouses played at Sammy Cox Field on the UNC Pembroke campus.
Ben Peacock and Carson Gipson posted four strikeouts apiece, while Will Pennington logged three strikeouts. The trio combined to yield just one walk and allow six Post 49 batters to reach base.
Justin Holland (RBI), Braeden Collins (two RBI) and Sam Rice (two RBI) cranked out two hits apiece. Will Albert, Will Harris and Tanner Capps each supplied one hit.
Matt Kornegay delivered two RBI.
Wayne County (1-1 overall) sent 19 batters to the plate during the first two innings. A combination of hits along with walks and errors by Post 49 allowed the visitors to build a 9-0 advantage.
Weather permitting, Post 11 opens its home season Thursday against Kenly. First pitch is 6 p.m. at Charles Davis Field on the campus of Charles B. Aycock High School.
