North Duplin boys win Carolina 1A XC title


NEWTON GROVE - Noel Rangel and Genaro Pacheco each posted a top-three finish and helped lead North Duplin to the team title during the season-ending Carolina 1A cross country championship meet contested at Hobbton.

A senior, Rangel ran the 3.1-mile course in a runner-up time of 20 minutes, 13 seconds. Pacheco crossed the line third in 20:25.

Freshman Ben Bullard ended up sixth in 22:39. Sophomore Luke Holland seized ninth place in 23:36, while freshman Sam Carr wound up 11th in 24:01. Christian Perez, a senior, placed 12th in 24:15.

The Rebels defeated Neuse Charter 18-40 in team competition.

Hobbton’s Victor Lopic seized the individual title in 19:45.

On the girls’ side, freshman Baker Sumner led the Rebels with a 19th-place effort of 36:19. Sophomore Judith Rangel finished 20th in 37:08, followed by teammates Valentina Kime (37:48) and Anahie Vasquez (40:45).

Rosewood’s Jaylee Amy continued her season-long dominance with a first-place time of 23:06. The Eagles edged Hobbton 24-31 for the team title.
