Daniels & Daniels of Goldsboro began work on the site of the new Southern Wayne High School gym on Oct. 15, moving soil to clear the way for its foundation.
A new gym is becoming more real for the Southern Wayne community after new bids were allowed on Aug. 8 and Daniels & Daniels of Goldsboro was awarded the project with a base bid of $5.997 million. Wayne County commissioners voted 6-0 on Aug. 26 to move forward with the board’s original plans to construct a gym on Southern Wayne’s campus.
Daniels & Daniels are removing unsuitable soil as well as bringing in soil to prepare the building pad for the gym. The company is also mitigating stormwater drainage issues at the site.
“I hope in a few weeks they will start sewer line work. We are keeping our fingers crossed for good weather this winter. We are working on scheduling a groundbreaking soon,” said Tim Harrell, assistant superintendent of support services at Wayne County Public Schools.
It is still unclear if the new gym will be solely used for Southern Wayne athletics or also open to community events.
