BEAULAVILLE - East Duplin notched the game-winning goal with four seconds remaining in regulation and upended Spring Creek, 4-3, in the East Central 2A boys’ soccer opener for both teams Monday.
“I always hate being on the losing side of last-minute goals, but I am still proud of my boys for fighting the entire 80 minutes of the game,” said SC head coach Miguel Torres. “We did a very good job the entire game of building out the back and making the ball go through our midfielders so they could try to spread the field through our wingers.
“But we also allowed four goals, which means we have to be a lot better defensively.”
Jorge Josue Sanchez-Inestroza scored in the 76th and 78th minute for the Gators. Teammates Oswaldo Escudero provided two assists, while Adrian Tavrera collected one goal.
SC goalie Edgar Juarez-Perez had two saves.
“We play, in my opinion, in one of the toughest 2A conferences in our region, so we must be solid defensively to win games,” said Torres. “We have a lot to improve on, so we will go back to the training pitch and get better.”
The Gators (0-1-0 overall) entertain Wallace-Rose Hill on Wednesday. Kickoff is 5 p.m. in “The Swamp.”
