Diamond Trojans split doubleheader with King

Posted

The University of Mount Olive softball team split their doubleheader series today with King University. The Trojans picked up the victory in game one winning 6-1, but the Tornado fought off a sweep and won the second game in a low-scoring 1-0 affair moving Mount Olive's record to 20-12 on the season.

Game one

North Duplin graduate Haley Brogden got the start for the Trojans today as she went for her eighth win of the season. King took the lead quickly scoring in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead going into the second inning.

Mount Olive didn't allow King to hold the lead for long as they scored two runs in the third inning and four in the fourth pushing their lead to 6-1. Brogden settled down and mowed down the Tornado batters for the rest of the ballgame as King was held scoreless after the first inning.

The Trojans didn't score any more runs either, but the six that they scored in the third and fourth innings got the job done allowing Mount Olive to pick up their 20th win of the season and Brogden's eighth win of the season.

Junior Amber Elliot had a big game for Mount Olive going 2-for-3 and finishing with three RBI. Freshman Megan Bryant also had a big game for the Diamond Trojans going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a double in game one.

Game two

Mallory Ratcliff got the start for the Trojans in game two against King. The Tornado once again scored in the first inning to take a quick lead. The offense for Mount Olive didn't translate over to game two as the Trojans were held scoreless.

King pitcher Casey Gilbert pitched a complete game shutout holding Mount Olive to only four hits in the ballgame. With the loss, Mount Olive finished this weekend with two wins and two losses now sitting at 20-12 on the season.

The Trojans will play again on Tuesday when they host conference foe, Belmont Abbey. Game one will begin at 2 and game two will be at 4.
