Black History Parade steps off Saturday

Plans have been finalized for the 12th annual Black History Parade, set for Saturday at 1 p.m. in Mount Olive.

Event organizer Vicky Darden said the lineup will begin at 11 a.m. on Talton Avenue. The parade will end up at Carver Cultural Center on S. Breazeale Ave.

ROTC, cheerleaders and band participants will be fed after the parade, Darden said.

The grand marshal for this year’s parade is Wayne County Commissioner Ed Cromartie and professional boxer James “Bonecrusher” Smith of Duplin County. WRAL reporter Gilbert Baez will also participate in the event.

Candy will be tossed to youngsters. No horses will be entered this year due to insurance reasons.

A surprise event will be held prior to the parade.

Darden said she would like to thank the late Ora Jean Truzy and Sheila Oates for their efforts in initially organizing the parade 12 years ago, and Ricky Faire for his dedicated work over the years.

Food vendors will be set up along Breazeale Avenue during the parade.
