Anniversary set for one of Mount Olive’s oldest churches


Greetings from the Wesley Smith Chapel Community! A homecoming celebration will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday with the message delivered by our pastor Elder Kenneth Freeman and music by the choir. We’re inviting all family and friends to come and fellowship. Dinner will be served.

Other programs and events coming up at local churches include:

  • Soldiers for Christ Outreach Ministry, 1818 S. Slocumb St., Goldsboro, will celebrate the 18th anniversary of its pastor, Charles Spears, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Elder Douglas Davis of Deeper Life Church Ministry in Goldsboro will lead the service. Elder Sandra Williams of Shacklefree Church Outreach Ministry will lead the service at 7 p.m. Thursday. On Friday at 7 p.m., Elder Walter Brown of Judah Place of Deliverance will render the service and Pastor Raymond Haywood of Christian Fellowship Center in Snow Hill will lead the service at 11 a.m. Sunday.
  • Northeast Chapel Church, 320 E. James St., will celebrate its 154th church anniversary on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Northeast Chapel is the oldest black church in Mount Olive. A revival service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday with Elder Doretha Brown serving as guest preacher, accompanied by the Parkers Chapel Church Choir and its congregation of Goldsboro. Elder Samuel Johnson and the Winn Chapel Choir and congregation of Mount Olive will lead the 7:30 p.m. service Friday. At 11 a.m. Sunday, Elder Charles Foye and Gods People for Purpose Ministry of Delaware will render the service. Dinner will be served. The pastor, Elder Jesse Warren, and church trustee Al Southerland invite each and all to come, fellowship and help them mark the church’s 154th anniversary.
  • Howell Chapel Church of Christ, 214 E. Preston St., Selma, will celebrate the anniversary of its pastor Elder Calvin Dean, and lady-elect Shannon Dean at 11 a.m. Sunday with Elder Patrick McKoy, the Higher Calling Church of Christ Choir, usher and congregation of Goldsboro rendering the service. At 3 p.m. Sunday, Elder David Marable, the St. Paul Church of Christ Choir, usher and congregation of Clinton will lead the service at the church. The Howell Chapel Church family invites you to come and show love.
  • First Baptist Church, 403 E. Albritton St., Calypso, will celebrate its homecoming at 11 a.m. Sunday with special guests Elder Tony Whitted, the Faison Chapel MB Church choir, usher and congregation rendering the service. Deacon Derrick King of Greater Six Run MB Church in Turkey will also preside. The church’s pastor Elder Anthony Ezzell invite each one of you to come home for homecoming.
  • Union Wesley AME Zion Church, 3424 Summerlin Crossroad Road, to celebrate Men’s Day at 11 a.m. Sunday with Elder Donald Graham, the Sampson Chapel Church male chorus, ushers and congregation of Clinton rendering the service.
  • An appreciation service honoring Sister Teresa Baker will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18 at St. Luke Church of Christ, 636 Waller Road, with Design for Purpose soloist Brother Terry. A special surprise guest will be announced later. Baker will be celebrating 49 years of playing keyboard, piano, drums and bass guitar and singing to accompany many funerals in the area. Don’t forget to save the date and make plans to help celebrate and show love to this awesome dynamic musician.
  • Elder Angela Whitehead will be the guest preacher at a 7:30 p.m. service Sunday at Greater St. Luke UHC, 310 W. South St., Rose Hill. The pastor and District Elder Anthony Flow invite you to come and fellowship.
  • New Jackson Tabernacle, 431 Franklin St., will host a youth revival at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 7-9. Pastor Betty Faison invites you to come and bring all youth. The guest speakers will be announced later.
  • A worship service is held every second and fourth Sunday at 11 a.m. at St. James Church of Christ, 514 S. Breazeale Ave., where the pastor is Elder Ernest and Evangelist Sadie Watson with Bible studies each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
  • Holy Temple UHC, 405 Parker St., Calypso, host worship services every second and fourth Sunday at 11 a.m. Pastor Elder Scottie Rodgers invites you to come and fellowship.
  • Women of Destiny at St. Luke Church of Christ, 430 E. Elm St., Goldsboro, will present “Colours Table” at 5 p.m. Aug. 17, with the event’s colors being yellow or gold and casual attire accepted.   • Mark your calendar and save the date of Oct. 13 as yours truly, Glenda Ward, will celebrate 18 years of community service with special guest Bishop Richard Johnson, the St. Peters Church of Christ Choir, usher and congregation of Smithfield, leading the service.

    Happy 25th pastor’s anniversary to Pastor Janice Williams. Happy third anniversary to Elder Terrell and Evangelist Temekia Michelle Powell, who celebrated on July 23. I’d also like to wish a happy anniversary to Bobby and Katrina Kornegay on July 23.

    Happy special birthday to Edward Faison, who celebrated July 21, from yours truly and Christine Pittsman.

    Like Morning Dew Ministries and Strong Ministries presented “The Spiritual Gifts Gathering, Part 2,” hosted by Elder Tachala Hood and Apostle Kimberly J. Armstrong at The Goldsboro Raleigh District Assembly, 211 Hooks River Road, Goldsboro, on Saturday, July 27.

    I’m wishing a happy special birthday to my wonderful, amazing, sweet, beautiful sister-in-law Dorothy Inez Ward, who celebrated on July 27, from your husband, Ronald Ward, your children, your niece, nephews and grandchildren. We love you very much.
