From there, the Saints held on to clinch the 1-0 victory.
Javier Lujano was the game-changer, making several key saves and earning the shutout when his team needed it most.
Final: Southern Wayne Saints 1, Southern Nash Firebirds 0.
The Saints’ conference opener featured several key moments on both sides of the ball, with No. 2 Jayden Bond and goalkeeper Javier Lujano stepping up when Southern Wayne needed them most.
Bond delivered a game-saving defensive block, helping preserve the Saints’ chances and showing the determination the team brought into its first conference matchup. For Bond, the play was less about individual recognition and more about doing whatever it took to help his teammates.
“I was just trying to get my team the win. We’ve worked hard and wanted to prove ourselves in this first conference game,” Bond said.
While Bond made a crucial play defensively, Lujano anchored the Saints in goal with a standout performance. The goalkeeper recorded 16 saves, repeatedly keeping Southern Wayne within striking distance and giving his teammates confidence on the field.
Lujano said his mindset was simple: step up when his team needed him and protect the net at all costs.
“I was just really ready to step it up and protect the net as much as I could,” Lujano said.
Lujano also credited the coaching staff for their support and confidence throughout the match.
“Thanks to Head Coach Ramirez, Assistant Coach Lara and Assistant Coach Ramirez for believing in me,” Lujano said.
With Bond making a crucial defensive play and Lujano coming up with save after save, the Saints showed the fight and defensive determination needed as they opened conference play.
