Saints rally falls just short in thrilling conference clash against Fike

in

DUDLEY — The Southern Wayne Saints entered conference play with energy, but it was the Fike Golden Demons who struck first. With No. 1 James Graham on the mound for the Saints, Fike opened the game aggressively. A series of base hits and productive at bats allowed the Demons to push across an early run despite solid defensive efforts, including a key catch in left field by No. 3 Cayden Mozingo.

The Saints’ pitcher No. 1 James Graham responded well, recording back-to-back strikeouts to limit further damage, but Fike held the early advantage.

Saints Search for Rhythm at the Plate

Southern Wayne struggled to find consistency early on. While players like No. 15 Logan Denning and No. 10 Channing Grady managed base hits, the Saints were unable to capitalize, as the Demons’ defense held firm and forced key outs to end innings.

Fike continued to apply pressure offensively, taking advantage of walks, bunts, and a costly miscommunication by the Saints that allowed multiple runners to score. This surge helped the Golden Demons build a commanding 5–0 lead midway through the game.

A Shift in Energy Sparks the Saints

Despite the deficit, the Saints showed resilience. A spark began with disciplined at bats from No. 9 Landon Schroeder and No. 6 Jahari Spell, who both reached base and helped load the bases. The turning point came when No. 1 James Graham delivered a clutch hit to right field, bringing in a run and igniting the dugout.

Southern Wayne continued to chip away at the lead. Walks played a crucial role, as patience at the plate brought in additional runs. By the end of the rally, the Saints had narrowed the gap to 5–3, shifting momentum in their favor.

Comeback Completed in Dramatic Fashion

The Saints’ persistence paid off in a later inning. With runners on base, aggressive baserunning and smart situational play led to a dramatic moment No. 27 Peyton Harrell stole home to tie the game at 5–5, completing an impressive comeback.

At that point, Southern Wayne had completely flipped the energy of the game, putting the Golden Demons on their heels.

Golden Demons Respond to Reclaim Control

Just as quickly as momentum swung, Fike answered back. Taking advantage of walks and timely hitting, the Demons put together another offensive surge. A controversial scoring play and multiple hits to the outfield allowed Fike to bring in several runs, regaining control with a 9–5 lead.

Final Push Falls Short

The Saints refused to go quietly. No. 9 Landon Schroeder led off with a double, and Southern Wayne continued to fight for opportunities. However, strong defensive plays by the Demons, including key catches to halt momentum, ultimately sealed the outcome.

Despite their efforts and a late push, the Saints came up just short in a hard-fought battle.

Final Score: Southern Wayne Saints 7, Fike Golden Demons 9
