The Southern Wayne Saints opened the game with intensity, matching basket for basket against the Goldsboro Cougars in the opening minutes. With the score sitting at 4–3 in favor of Goldsboro, both teams showed early signs of determination. The Cougars soon found their rhythm, however, stretching the lead to 10–5.
The Saints refused to back down. Strong drives from No. 11 helped Southern Wayne chip away at the deficit, bringing the score to 7–15. A powerful and-one finish by No. 2 Douglas Wynn gave the Saints a spark, followed by a key steal from No. 3 AJ Thompson, who went 1-for-1 at the line. Still, the Cougars countered with tough finishes of their own, including a big layup by No. 22 Markeith Garner through heavy Saints pressure.
A late steal and score boosted Goldsboro’s lead, and the Cougars closed the first quarter ahead 24–11.
Second Quarter: Saints Fight, Cougars Respond
Southern Wayne opened the second quarter with aggressive defensive pressure, looking to disrupt the Cougars’ offensive flow. Goldsboro’s knocked down a free throw to extend the lead, but the Saints answered quickly No. 23 Ivory Moore drilled a much-needed three-pointer to cut the score to 25–16.
Goldsboro responded with a swift layup, reminding the Saints of their ability to take over at any moment. Both teams traded trips to the free-throw line with Southern Wayne’s No. 1 Jaylen Carr and Goldsboro’s No. 0 Zayveon White each going 1-for-1.
A few miscommunications and turnovers slowed the Saints’ momentum, but the Cougars weren’t able to fully capitalize. Still, Goldsboro maintained control, taking a comfortable 36–22 lead into halftime.

The Cougars came out of the locker room continuing the dominance they built in the first half. While the Saints searched for offensive rhythm and ways to regain momentum, Goldsboro’s depth, experience, and pressure proved overwhelming.
Southern Wayne never lacked heart, continuing to battle, contest shots, and push the tempo but the Cougars’ execution steadily widened the gap. Goldsboro controlled the pace on both ends, limiting scoring opportunities and converting their own with efficiency.
In the end, the veteran presence and consistency of the Cougars were too much for the young Saints squad.
