DUDLEY — The opening round of the playoffs featured an exciting matchup between the Southern Wayne Saints and the Cedar Ridge Red Wolves. With both teams entering the game boasting similar records, this contest promised to be highly competitive and it certainly delivered.
First Half: Saints Strike Early
The game began with the Red Wolves controlling early possession, but the Saints’ defense quickly halted their momentum. Both teams traded possessions in the opening minutes, each testing the other’s defense.
The Saints capitalized first when No. 9 Skervenson Aphael found the back of the net at the 34:20 mark, giving Southern Wayne a 1–0 lead. Building on that momentum, the Saints continued to apply pressure, creating several strong scoring opportunities.
After a foul on the Saints, Cedar Ridge was awarded a free kick, but No. 5 Anthony Giron Castillo from Southern Wayne cleared the ball with solid defensive play. The Saints maintained the upper hand, and at the 18:17 mark, No. 10 Jaime Martinez extended their lead with another goal, putting the Saints up 2–0.
Cedar Ridge responded after a foul in the box led to a penalty kick, which they converted at 16:38, narrowing the deficit to 2–1. Both teams exchanged possessions through the remainder of the half, with Saints goalkeeper Javier Lujano making key saves to preserve the lead.
Halftime Score: Southern Wayne 2, Cedar Ridge 1
Second Half: Saints Hold Strong
The second half opened with both teams battling for possession. The Saints earned an early free kick after a foul, but No.5 Anthony Giron Castillo’s attempt sailed just over the crossbar. Cedar Ridge countered with several offensive pushes, but the Saints’ defense and keeper Javier Lujano stood firm.
A yellow card was issued to the Saints midway through the half, giving the Red Wolves a chance to equalize, but once again, Lujano made the save. Moments later, Cedar Ridge received a yellow card of their own, and the Saints made them pay. At the 18:15 mark, No. 26 Lorenzo Aguilon scored to put the Saints ahead 3–1.
As time wound down, both teams continued to trade possessions. The Saints kept up the pressure with multiple shots on goal. At the same time, the Red Wolves grew increasingly frustrated, receiving several yellow cards late in the game including one following contact with Saints goalkeeper Javier Lujano.
Despite a few final attempts from Cedar Ridge, the Saints’ defense held strong until the final whistle.
