DUDLEY – Donshae Boseman is headed to the next level.
The Southern Wayne senior signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball next season at Barton College on May 27.
“I had a visit on campus, talked to the coach personally,” Boseman said. “I like the vibe, the coaches showed me a lot of love. I felt like it was the right spot for me [and] I think they will help me on the court, but also off the court academically.”
A quiet player who leads by example, Boseman turned in a solid senior campaign on the hardwood. The 6-foot-3 combo guard knocked down 11.5 points, snagged 3.4 rebounds and doled out 2.6 assists per outing.
He connected on 52% of his field goals and drained 78 percent of his free throw attempts. He logged double-figure performances in 11 games.
Boseman has yet to blossom on the court.
“When you have quiet guys, they’re usually great players and their voice is used in a different manner,” first-year SW head coach Brian West said. “Most of the time it’s their play and character that allow them to be heard.
“He’s naturally a scorer … a two guard. He can shoot the ball from deep, he plays the mid-range [game], he can get to the basket. He makes the right basketball plays, so he can get there and contribute in the style of offense they run [at Barton].”
BC’s staff didn’t see Boseman in person.
They viewed his game film and invited him for a campus visit.
Once they met and talked, Boseman immediately felt comfortable. He began thinking about ways he could contribute to the tradition-rich program, which last won a Conference Carolinas regular-season crown in 2014.
The Bulldogs’ last NCAA tournament trip was 2012.
“I think I need to improve on finishing more with my left going to the basket, absorbing more contact and keeping my confidence level up high,” said Boseman, who plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy.
“You have to work hard, keep your grades up and stay focused. They love their players and help their players the best way they can, but you’ve got to put in the work. You have to help yourself, too.”
