ALLENDALE, Mich. – University of Mount Olive student-athletes Jon Wojcuich and Mary Brigid Keck earned All-American honors on opening day of the 2022 NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championship meet last Thursday.

Wojcuich reached the hammer throw event finals with a heave of 60.83 meters (199 feet, 7 inches) on his first attempt. On his sixth and last throw of the meet, he posted a mark of 61.98 meters (203-4) and ended up fifth overall to earn A-A honors.

An exercise science major, Wojcuich compiled a 3.98 grade-point average (GPA) and was named to the 2021-22 Academic All-District 3 men’s track and field/cross country team.

Keck notched A-A accolades with a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw. She recorded a throw of 56.47 meters (185-3) on her first attempt.

Grand Valley State University played host to the three-day meet.

Three Trojans picked

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three University of Mount Olive student-athletes played in the 2022 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association North-South Division I-II All-Star men’s lacrosse game on May 27.

Representing the Trojans were goalie Andrew Avarello, senior short-stick defensive midfielder Jake Mackenzie and senior midfielder Lucas Shein.

Avarello recorded 209 saves and ranked second in goals-against-average (9.86) among Conference Carolinas goalies. He logged a .592 save percentage and collected 13.06 saves per outing between the pipes. The New York native earned USILA All-Region (honorable mention), Conference Carolinas All-Conference and Conference Carolinas All-Tournament accolades.

Mackenzie led the team in ground balls (97), forced 12 turnovers and recorded 9 points on six goals and three assists. The Maryland resident received USILA All-Region (third team), Conference Carolinas All-Conference and Conference Carolinas All-Tournament honors.

Shein, from Canada, scored 26 goals and doled out eight assists. He also collected USILA All-Region (honorable mention), Conference Carolinas All-Conference and Conference Carolinas All-Tournament awards.

Duo honored

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Kylie Emmanuele and Courtlynn Cooney represent the University of Mount Olive on the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-America softball team.

Emanuele was a first-team recipient, while Cooney drew a third-team nod.

An all-region and National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American, Emanuele batted a conference-leading .484 and collected 82 RBI, which led all of Division II this season. She belted a single-season, school-record 13 home runs and was 21-for-21 on stolen-base attempts.

Emanuele was named the Conference Carolinas player of the year.

Cooney, an all-region and first-team all-conference pick, hit .442 and emerged as the league leader in runs scored (65) and stolen bases (46). She knocked in 33 runs and currently ranks fifth in the NCAA in runs scored and stolen bases.
