WARSAW — Francisco Roldan posted a hat trick (three goals) during James Kenan’s 9-0, mercy-rule romp over Kinston in their East Central 2A boys’ soccer contest.
The game was called at halftime.
Yordan Santivanez tallied two goals.
Peter Omega, Kebert David, Ismael Covarrubias and Gerzon Diaz registered one goal apiece.
The Tigers (6-2-0 overall, 2-0-0 ECC) recorded their fifth shutout of the season. The Vikings (0-3-0, 0-3-0) have lost all three matches in mercy-rule fashion.
James Kenan returns to action Monday at ECC member North Lenoir.
Rebels’ Gonzalez returns
NEWTON GROVE — North Duplin’s Luis Avilez-Gonzalez and Neuse Charter’s Bella Strickland emerged victorious in their respective races during a Carolina 1A cross country meet held at Hobbton High School.
Gonzalez finished the 5k course (3.12 miles) in 19 minutes, 32 seconds. He sat out Tuesday’s home meet at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park due to an achilles injury.
Rosewood’s junior tandem of Gage Lewis (20:50) and Noah Fishman (21:47). Neuse Charter senior William McGinnis (23:57) and junior Garrett Hollyfield (24:08) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
North Duplin sophomore Lucas Gregory (24:10), senior Sam Carr (25:04) and sophomore Jair Quintana (26:55) rounded out the top eight.
Teammate Miqueas Lopez Hernand ended up 13th.
On the girls’ side, Rosewood took the next three spots behind Strickland, who completed the trek in 23:38. The Eagles’ Dylan Jinks (24:35) took second, followed by senior Abigail Rowe (26:10) and junior Morgan Jinks (26:39).
Hobbton freshman Zannah Wright (27:21) was fifth.
North Duplin’s Abby Rose crossed the line seventh in 28:49. Teammates Roselin Orozco (29:29) and Madeline Kimes (30:07) placed 10th and 11th, respectively.
Katie Lopez Hernandez (34:56) and Cheyenne Jones (40:42) wound up among the top 16.
North Duplin’s boys posted a perfect score of 15 points in the boys’ team standings. Rosewood defeated North Duplin, 16-42, in the girls’ standings.
The next Carolina 1A race is Oct. 1 at Lakewood.
Gators cage Bulldogs
HOLLY RIDGE — Jeheili Velasquez collected Spring Creek’s lone goal in a 1-0, non-conference triumph over traditional powerhouse Dixon High School on Thursday evening.
It was Valesquez’s second goal of the season.
SC goalie Edgar Avila earned the shutout between the pipes. The Gators are 3-1-1 in their last five outings, including shutout decisions against Wallace-Rose Hill (0-0 draw) and North Johnston (1-0 in overtime).
Spring Creek (5-7-2 overall) visits Neuse Six 2A rival Princeton next Tuesday. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.
Rebels VB falls on road
SMITHFIELD — North Duplin started second-half Carolina 1A volleyball conference play with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-15 loss at Neuse Charter on Thursday evening.
Lily Fulghum dished out 15 assists and notched three digs defensively for the Rebels, who dipped to 3-3 against league opposition this season. Iala Overton and Carrly Strickland posted four and three digs, respectively.
Ady Spence provided five digs.
Eva Quintanilla contributed five kills and four digs. Tateyawna Faison logged four kills and four blocks. Maggie Brown registered two kills and three blocks, while sister Abigeal Norris Brown had four kills and two blocks.
Kloe Deliovas filed two kills and two digs. Libero Marissa Bernal had two kills and 12 digs.
North Duplin (8-6 overall) continues play next Tuesday at Lakewood and returns home Oct. 3 for its annual cancer fund raiser game against Union.
Saints turned back
WILSON — Libero Jayce Hargrove recorded a career-high 15 digs during Southern Wayne’s 25-19, 25-22, 25-15 setback against Wilson Hunt on the Quad County 3A volleyball scene.
Jy’Asha Cousins just missed a double-double with 11 kills and eight blocks. Jurnae Ammons had four kills and four blocks, while outside hitter Mylee Wiggs contributed 19 digs and six kills.
Alysa Craft had eight kills. Morgan Brimberry stuffed her stat sheet with seven digs and two kills.
Taylor Lee passed out 21 assists and picked up seven digs.
Southern Wayne (3-13 overall, 1-9 QCC) is the guest of South Johnston next Monday, according to an updated MaxPreps schedule.
