Possible inclement weather from the remnants of Hurricane Helene have prompted changes in this week’s high school football schedule.

Wayne County Public Schools officials say they are monitoring the storm, which could produce heavy leftover rain and potential tornadoes.

“No district decisions have been made with regards to athletics,” said WCPS in a released statement. “As with any concerns with weather, schools can reschedule games on their own if they choose.”

Southern Wayne (1-3 overall) and Spring Creek (1-2) have moved their games to Thursday evening.

The Saints and West Johnston agreed to cancel their JV game to make room for their varsity matchup, according to Saints athletics director David Lee.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Benson.

The Gators return to Camp Lejeune to complete a suspended game from two weeks ago. Spring Creek led 6-0 before heavy rain and lightning halted the contest with nine minutes remaining in the first quarter.

North Duplin’s home game with Northwest 1A member Alleghany remains undetermined. Ricky Edwards spoke with the school’s athletic director Wednesday morning.

“It’s a five-hour bus ride [one way] for them,” Edwards said. “I told him everyone around here had moved their games to Thursday. He didn’t want to make a decision yet, so I told him I would give him the benefit of the doubt and see what happens.

“[The weather] doesn’t look good. If we don’t play on Friday, we won’t play it at all.”

Unbeaten James Kenan (5-0) is idle this week.

“The administrative staff continuously monitors weather reports and advisories received from our local emergency management teams,” said in a statement by Dr. Austin Obasahan, superintendent of Duplin County Schools.

“Should there be a need to change school status, notifications will be sent out as soon as possible. Safety of our school community is top priority.”
