CALYPSO — Tateyawna Faison played a consistent game at middle hitter during North Duplin’s three-set sweep of Carolina 1A volleyball foe Union on Tuesday evening.

Faison delivered eight kills, four blocks and logged a .700 hitting percentage during the Rebels’ 28-26, 25-23, 25-13 victory.

Lilly Fulghum supplied 18 assists, seven service aces, three kills and three digs. Ady Spence logged two aces, three digs and three assists.

Maggie Brown recorded four kills and two aces, while Abigeal Norris Brown pounded out three kills.

Marissa Bernal had 13 digs and two digs. Iala Overton registered four digs. Melany Sanchez had three digs.

The Rebels defeated the Spartans for just the third time in their last seven meetings and hold an 11-7 edge in the series since 2011.

North Duplin (7-4 overall, 2-1 Carolina) returns home Thursday to face Rosewood. Union (0-13, 0-3) is the guest of Sampson County rival Hobbton the same evening.

SW JV game cancelled

DUDLEY — Southern Wayne and East Wake will not play their junior varsity football game Thursday evening.

Athletics director David Lee made the announcement Tuesday morning. The Quad County Conference game will not be rescheduled.

The Saints’ varsity squad travels to East Wake on Friday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Wendell.

Saints’ duo earns victory

DUDLEY — Southern Wayne prevailed at No. 1 doubles during its 8-1 loss to West Johnston on the Quad County 3A girls’ tennis scene Tuesday afternoon.

The tandem of Charity Van Dyke and Kylie Hyde knocked off the Wildcats’ Olivia Byrd-Elly Jens, 8-2.

SW head coach David Van Dyke selected junior Ameya Randolph as the player-of-the-match. Seeded No. 3 in singles, Randolph dropped a well-played 6-2, 7-6 (2) to Byrd.

Van Dyke battled in a 7-5, 6-3 loss to junior Bella Drown at No. 1 singles. The Wildcats won all six singles matches.

Southern Wayne (1-7 overall, 1-6 QCC) begin a three-match road swing today at Hunt. The Saints are the guests of East Wake on Thursday.

Hawks sweep Tigers

La GRANGE — Y’Anna Rivers pounded out five kills during James Kenan’s three-set loss to East Central 2A volleyball foe North Lenoir inside Wooten Gym on Tuesday evening.

Shylah Sloan posted two blocks and served three aces for the Tigers, who endured a 13-25, 12-25, 15-25 loss. Ava Jones notched three kills and one ace.

Alayjah Wright knocked down three kills, while Kierra Williams picked up three digs.

James Kenan (6-6 overall, 1-3 ECC) returns home Thursday for an ECC contest against Southwest Onslow. The JV match begins at 4:30 p.m. inside Harmon Gym.
