Kenan dumps Spartans
WARSAW — James Kenan completed its first-regular season sweep of Union in more than a decade on the volleyball court Monday evening.
Y’anna Rivers and Shylah Sloan provided eight kills apiece for the Tigers, who prevailed 25-20, 25-23, 25-13 inside Harmon Gymnasium.
Sloan served a team-high seven aces.
“Shylah’s serves were electric and Y’Anna’s kills were powerful,” said JK head coach Katina Farrior.
Rivers and Jourdan Joe each served three aces. Kierra Williams delivered four kills and three blocks. Ava Jones cranked out three kills.
The Tigers last swept the Spartans in 2012.
James Kenan (5-4 overall) steps back into East Central 2A Conference play with a home outing today against South Lenoir. The Blue Devils have won all six ECC meetings in straight-set fashion.
Union exited 0-9.
Dark Horses topple Tigers
CLINTON — Traditional boys’ soccer juggernaut Clinton defeated James Kenan, 3-1, on the pitch Monday evening.
The Dark Horses halted the Tigers’ string of four consecutive shutouts to start the season.
Senior Griffin Williams, sophomore Chris Zeleya and senior Oskar Adasiak supplied one goal apiece for Clinton. Nelson Guerrero and Holden Spell each contributed one assist.
Kenan stats were not available.
Clinton remained unbeaten in eight outings this season and improved to 7-6-1 over James Kenan since 2016.
The Tigers departed 4-1-0. They continue play Thursday at Charles B. Aycock, the reigning Quad County 3A champ. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. at Hardy Talton Stadium in Pikeville.
Bulldogs sweep Gators
SEVEN SPRINGS — Princeton defeated short-handed Spring Creek 5-2 and 9-0 during their Neuse Six 2A girls’ tennis doubleheader Monday afternoon.
Other player obligations depleted the Gators’ lineup, which led to four forfeits – two in each match. The teams played eight-game pro sets since Spring Creek’s courts have no lights.
In the opening match, Kennedy Denton and Emma Scott Hardy each emerged victorious in singles. The second-seeded Denton pulled out an 8-4 win over Anna Underwood. Third-seeded Hardy fended off junior Daytona Mix, 8-6.
The Gators’ Emilia West and Bulldogs’ Kacie Olive needed tiebreakers to determine the outcomes in both of their singles matches. Olive prevailed 8-7 (2) in the first match and 8-7 (4) in the second encounter.
Denton-West suffered a tough, 6-4 loss to Anna Underwood-Olive at No. 1 doubles in the second match.
