MOUNT OLIVE — Kate Carter, a senior accounting major at the University of Mount Olive (UMO), is making significant strides this summer as an intern with the United States Golf Association (USGA). At just 19 years old, Carter’s impressive journey includes academic excellence, athletic prowess, and valuable professional experience.
A hometown talent Carter hails from Laurinburg, where she grew up surrounded by the support of her loving family, including parents William and Leigh Carter, and sisters Claire and Carleigh Carter. She attended Scotland High School. Carter’s athletic background includes participation in various sports, such as golf, tennis, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Her dedication to volleyball led her to UMO in the fall of 2022, where she found the perfect balance between academics and athletics.
Carter’s academic journey at UMO has been nothing short of stellar. Maintaining a 3.921 GPA, she is on track to graduate in the spring of 2025. Her passion for numbers and problem-solving led her to choose accounting as her major. Beyond the classroom, Carter shines as a member of the Trojan women’s volleyball team and the Accounting Society. She also showcased her analytical skills during the Ethics Bowl her freshman year.
This past spring, Carter interned at Markham, Mitchel, and Stroud, gaining invaluable experience during tax season. This summer, she is expanding her horizons with the USGA, working with the merchandising team during the Women’s US Open and the Senior Men’s US Open. Carter’s role involves assisting with visual merchandising, inventory management, and customer service, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of the operations behind major golf tournaments.
Described by those closest to her as hardworking, happy, bubbly, motivated, loving, and kind, Carter credits her family and faith as her primary sources of inspiration. “My family and God inspire me to be who I am. I have a very loving supportive family that inspires me to grow and be the best I can be. And by being a follower of Christ, I am inspired to love and treat everyone with kindness,” she says.
Carter attributes much of her growth to her time at UMO, praising the university for the opportunities it has provided. “UMO has helped me grow as both a student and a person and is preparing me for my future in many ways. My professors, coaches, and the entire UMO community have been incredibly supportive.”
Looking ahead as Carter continues her summer internship with the USGA, she remains enthusiastic about the future. “This internship has really opened up new ideas, and I am excited to see what the future holds. I would love to intern with the USGA again next summer and explore more opportunities in this field.”
