SEVEN SPRINGS — North Duplin’s Luis Avilez-Gonzalez emerged victorious during a Carolina 1A cross country meet held at picturesque Cliffs of the Neuse State Park Tuesday afternoon.

Gonzalez ran the 5k (3.1-mile course) in 20 minutes, 25 seconds.

Teammate Luke Holland claimed eighth overall in 22:38, while junior Sam Carr crossed the line 10th in 24:14. Gavin Burkin (14th, 25:44) and Lucas Gregory (16th, 27:02) rounded out the Rebels’ team effort.

Rosewood’s Andon Timmons placed second in 20:46, followed by teammate Gage Lewis (21:17). Neuse Charter’s Noah Highfil (21:42) and Mason Dinger (22:09) ended up fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Eagles edged the Rebels 25-30 in team competition.

Roselin Orozco posted North Duplin’s top finish — an 11th-place effort of 29:29 in the girls’ portion of the meet. Gabriella Zamudio (30:49) and junior Baker Sumner (31:13) wound up 14th and 15th, respectively.

Jackie Modina Guzman (17th, 34:14) and Sasha Arguijo (18th, 34:37) completed the Rebels’ team scoring. Brittany Huerta (20th, 36:04) and Jasmine Manzanares (21st, 36:09) also competed.

Rosewood junior Dylan Jinks ended up first in 24:42.

Neuse Charter’s Bella Strickland finished second in 24:48. Hobbton’s Andrea Sada-Romero (25:28), Rosewood senior India Young (25:57) and Hobbton junior McKayla Harris (26:51) rounded out the top five.

Tied with Hobbton for first with 28 team points, Rosewood earned the victory based on a better fifth-place individual finish.

Gators battle back

WILSON — Spring Creek rallied to defeat Neuse Six 2A volleyball rival Beddingfield 25-17, 21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-2 on Tuesday evening.

Additional details were not available.

The Gators (4-7 overall, 2-3 Neuse Six 2A) visit North Johnston on Thursday.

Saints end up fifth

FOUR OAKS — Regan Stribble carded a nine-hole round of 54 and helped Southern Wayne finish fifth overall during a Quad County 3A girls’ golf match at Reedy Creek Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Laura Summerlin and Catie Schallert each turned in a 55.

Chloe Sullivan posted a 60, while Emily Webster finished with a 61.

Southern Wayne travels to Lane Tree Golf Club for a non-conference match Thursday. Tee time is 3 p.m.

Wildcats sweep Rebels

CALYPSO — Hobbton ended a four-match skid on the Carolina 1A volleyball scene with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-22 conquest of North Duplin Tuesday.

Middle hitter Eva Quintanilla cranked out a team-high seven kills for the Rebels, who dropped to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in league matters this season.

Sophomore setter Lilly Fulghum handed out 15 assists and collected three digs. Addy Higginbotham supplied a team-best 11 digs and recorded three kills.

Reece Outlaw contributed five kills, two service aces, two blocks and five digs. Meghan Martin registered two blocks and two digs, while Sarah Thomas Tucker collected four digs.

Marissa Bernal had two digs.

North Duplin (6-6 overall, 2-2 Carolina 1A) entertains two-time defending conference champion Neuse Charter on Thursday.
