DEEP RUN — North Lenoir exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning to cap off a come-from-behind, 14-8 win over Southern Wayne at South Lenoir High School on Monday afternoon.
Southern Wayne seized a 3-0 lead in the third inning, only to see the Hawks knot the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth.
Saints right-hander Drew Sweet started on the bump and took the loss. The right-hander yielded eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits and logged five strikeouts in the scorebook.
Reliever Brayden McKee threw one-third of an inning and allowed an earned run on one hit. Freshman southpaw Hayden Waller surrendered five earned runs on two hits and collected a strikeout in one-third of an inning.
The trio combined to throw 129 pitches.
North Lenoir’s Jaiden Garrett (2-for-4, 4 RBI) and Hunter Columboe (3-for-4, 2 RBI) each cranked out a home run.
Alex Ferrell emerged as the Saints’ defensive leader with five putouts. Waller had four, while Tyler Odom recorded three.
Offensively, Sweet paced the offense with two hits and two RBI.
Waller (RBI), Cuyler Daly, Alex Ferrell, E’lla Boykin and Jake Coates provided one hit apiece. McKee contributed an RBI.
Southern Wayne couldn’t completely capitalize on 10 walks, two runners reaching on an error and a hit batsman. Coach Trae McKee’s club stranded 11 runners on base.
The Saints (9-5 overall) look to snap a four-game skid today against South Lenoir. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The Hawks (10-2) halted a four-game skid against Southern Wayne and face Eastern Wayne today at 4 p.m.
