DUDLEY — Aaron Whiting earned player-of-the-match accolades during Southern Wayne’s 7-2, non-conference conquest of short-handed Spring Creek on the boys’ tennis scene Wednesday afternoon.

A junior, Whiting defeated the Gators’ Dante Lamphear 8-0 at No. 1 singles.

Teammates Hudson Hulet, Matthew Blizzard and Cameron Jones each prevailed in their respective singles match. Blizzard dropped just one game at the No. 3 slot, while Hulet and Jones each posted an 8-3 victory.

The Saints earned walkover wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, and No. 3 doubles due to the Gators having four players available for the match.

Spring Creek claimed both doubles points.

The No. 1 tandem of Lamphear and sophomore Nate Slye squeezed out an 8-5 win over the Saints’ senior duo of Ian Whipkey and Alejandro Guzman.

Freshmen JP Alexander and Brady Papst teamed up for an 8-3 triumph over Southern Wayne freshmen Bryan Lopez and Tyshawn Melvin.

The Saints (2-12 overall) return to the courts Apr. 17 for their home finale against Quad County 3A rival Fike. They conclude regular-season play Apr. 19 at Charles B. Aycock.

Spring Creek (2-7) concludes its Neuse Six 2A campaign Apr. 17 with a doubleheader at Goldsboro High School.
