NEWTON GROVE — North Duplin’s Reece Outlaw just missed hitting for the cycle during a 20-0, mercy-rule romp over Carolina 1A softball rival Hobbton on Tuesday evening.
An East Carolina commit, Outlaw singled twice, tripled twice and belted a fifth-inning home run. She ended the day 5-for-5 with 3 RBI and scored four runs.
M’chelle Jaco batted 4-for-4, doubled and scored twice.
Addy Higginbotham collected three hits, stole two bases and crossed the plate on three occasions. Barton College signee Kasey Jones registered three hits, including a triple.
Any Spence logged three hits.
Winning pitcher Lilly Fulghum, Riley Hatch and lead-off batter Iala Overton supplied two hits apiece. Sarah Tucker contributed one hit.
Fulghum allowed two hits, struck out three and walked two inside the circle. She coaxed the Wildcats into 10 groundouts and two flyouts.
Hobbton had six base runners and left three in scoring position.
North Duplin (10-1 overall, 4-0 Carolina) returns home today for a non-conference game against county rival East Duplin. First pitch is 5 p.m.
Golden Falcons blank SW
DUDLEY — Deadlocked in a scoreless tie through four innings, Charles B. Aycock used a four-run, fifth-inning uprising to defeat Southern Wayne, 4-0, in their Quad County 3A baseball battle Tuesday evening.
The Golden Falcons’ tandem of Andrew Matthews and Johnathan Winters combined for a three-hitter.
A senior, Matthews allowed two hits, issued six walks and registered three strikeouts in the scorebook. Winters, a sophomore, earned the save with three innings of one-hit, four-strikeout relief.
Freshman Hayden Waller paced the Saints with two hits, including a double. Sophomore Tyler Odom batted 1-for-3 and emerged as the defensive leader with 13 putouts.
Drew Sweet took the mound loss. The junior righty limited the Golden Falcons to three hits and didn’t issue a walk during his 81-pitch outing.
Cameron Aycock doubled, tripled and logged an RBI for Aycock, which soared to 6-5 overall and 5-1 in QCC play this season.
Southern Wayne (9-3, 4-3) drew seven walks and left nine runners on base.
Weather permitting, the teams meet again Thursday in Pikeville. The JV game starts at 4 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
Warriors escape Saints
DUDLEY — Southern Wayne pushed perennial boys’ tennis power Wilson Hunt to the limit during their Quad County 3A contest Tuesday afternoon.
Tied at 3-3 after singles play, the Warriors claimed two doubles points and departed with a 5-4 win.
The Saints emerged victorious on courts No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5.
Second-seeded Drew Bryan won 6-3, 6-4. Hudson Hulet hung on 6-2, 7-6 (4) at the No. 4 slot, while Evin Williams prevailed 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
The duo of Bryan-Williams were tied 1-1 at No. 2 doubles before their opponents retired.
