Hunter Merritt helped lead Southern Wayne to a sixth-place finish during a multi-team Quad County 3A boys’ golf match contested at Southern Wayne Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Merritt fired an 87 on the challenging par-71 course.

Joseph Strange contributed a 91, while Anthony Culbreth carded a 93. Isaac Worth turned in a 103, which rounded out the Saints’ four-player total of 374.

Zyon Alston and James Faulk also competed for SW.

Led by Parker Denning’s 1-over-par 72, South Johnston emerged as the low-scoring team with a 298. Wilson County rivals Fike (327) and Hunt (332) claimed second and third place, respectively.

Fike’s Ethan Boyette earned medalist honors with a 1-under-par 70.

Colby Stephens shared second place with Denning and helped West Johnston place fourth with a 333.

Five strokes separated Charles B. Aycock (371), Southern Wayne and East Wake (376). Smithfield-Selma wound up with a 394.

According to their schedule, the Saints return to action Apr. 4 against Goldsboro High at Goldsboro Golf Course. The next QCC match is Apr. 18 at Reedy Creek Country Club.
