DUDLEY — Southern Wayne stepped back into the win column with a come-from-behind, 3-2 conquest of Quad County 3A baseball rival South Johnston on Tuesday evening.
The Trojans led 2-1 through 3 1/2 innings.
The Saints tied the game in the fourth and plated the game-deciding run in the fifth.
Alex Ferrell (RBI), Drew Sweet, Tyler Odom, Jake Coates (RBI), Cuyler Daly and E’lla Boykin provided one hit apiece. Hayden Waller contributed an RBI.
Sweet earned the mound win. The right-hander permitted two runs (one earned) on five hits and retired four Trojans on strikeouts.
Southern Wayne (7-1 overall, 2-1 QCC) visits Smithfield-Selma on Friday.
Saints boot Trojans
GOLDSBORO — Four players scored one goal apiece during Southern Wayne’s 4-1 victory over Quad County 3A rival South Johnston on Tuesday evening.
Aracely Perez, Kely Barrios, Allya Segura and Annette Vilchis each found the back of the net.
The Saints (5-2-1 overall, 2-1-0 QCC) are the guests of Smithfield-Selma on Friday.
SJ posts shutout
DUDLEY — Defending Quad County 3A softball champ South Johnston plated 10 runs during a three-inning stretch and defeated Southern Wayne, 11-0, on Tuesday evening.
Reagan Stribble and Jocelin Aguilar each had one hit for the Saints.
Stribble endured the mound loss. The freshman right-hander recorded four strikeouts and threw 66 strikes during her 93-pitch outing.
“We played OK, made some mistakes that hurt bad,” SW head coach Andy Sullivan said.
Southern Wayne (4-5, 2-1) travels to Smithfield-Selma on Friday.
SW linksters compete
Isaac Worth posted an 18-hole round of 94 during a Quad County 3A boys’ golf match held at Johnston County Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Joseph Strange contributed a 95. Hunter Merritt and Anthony Culbreth turned in rounds of 97 and 98, respectively.
Zyon Alston and James Faulk also competed for the Saints.
Southern Wayne returns home March 28 for a multi-team QCC match at Southern Wayne Country Club. Tee time is 1 p.m.
