CAMP LEJEUNE — North Duplin rewrote a couple of pages in the NC High School Athletic Association state baseball record book Wednesday afternoon.
The Rebels stole 21 bases in a 23-6, mercy-rule conquest of Lejeune. The mark surpassed the previous single-game record of 18 set by Canton Pisgah in 1980 and matched by Reidsville in 2011.
Freshman Garris Warren swiped five bags. He is the first player in 11 years to collect five SBs in a single game, and shares eighth place overall with 10 other players in the record book’s top-10 list.
“All legit because they threw at him on all of those [attempts],” ND head coach Colton Chrisman said.
Chrisman verified the records with the NCHSAA on Thursday morning.
And, for the second time in 24 hours, the Rebels’ pitching staff recorded its second consecutive no-hitter. The quartet of starter Tyler Johnsey, Esteban Santos Clark, Kayden Bowden and Billy McCoy combined for 10 strikeouts during the five-inning affair.
North Duplin has thrown three no-hitters this season.
The Devilpups (1-4 overall) plated six runs (three earned) on nine walks and three defensive miscues by the unbeaten Rebels, who swept the regular-season series. Lejeune dropped to 0-4 against Carolina 1A teams this season.
Hunt Pate emerged as the Rebels’ offensive leader with three hits, three RBI and three stolen bases.
“Big day for that kid,” Chrisman said.
Warren (two RBI) and Richard Noble (RBI) provided two hits apiece.
Branden Reyna belted a home run and collected two RBI. Multi-sport athlete Billy McCoy (two RBI), designated hitter Austin Duff, Wesley Holmes, Clark (three RBI), Brady Byrd (RBI) and Dante Sabeniteze (RBI) each recorded one hit.
“We are rolling … am happy for these boys,” Chrisman said.
North Duplin (6-0) returns home Friday to face Heide Trask. Game time is 6 p.m. in Calypso.
