WENDELL — Southern Wayne launched its Quad County 3A campaigns in victorious fashion on the softball and baseball diamonds, and soccer pitch on Tuesday evening.
Reagan Stribble tossed a complete game inside the pitcher’s circle during the Saints’ 17-3, mercy-rule triumph over softball rival East Wake.
The Saints pounded out a 7-1 victory in baseball.
Kely Barrios scratched twice as the Saints upended the Warriors, 3-1.
Softball
A freshman right-hander, Stribble logged a four-hit, eight-strikeout effort in the scorebook. She threw 58 strikes during her 86-pitch outing.
All three Warrior runs were unearned.
Offensively, Stribble (four RBI) and Jocelin Aguilar (three RBI) cranked out three hits apiece. Morgan Brinberry, Laura Summerlin (two RBI), Gracie Hinson (RBI), Mckenzie Strickland (two RBI) and Megan Long each provided two hits.
Kylie Barwick (RBI), Alyssa Darden (RBI), Jocelyn Bond and Avery Jennette (RBI) each contributed one hit.
“We are starting to come together as a family and it shows on the box score,” said first-year SW head coach Andy Sullivan. “We also welcomed back our catcher [Strickland] and she made her presence felt from the first pitch tonight.
“It’s a great day to be a Saint and the future is looking bright as we [Sullivan, assistant coach Danny Merritt] watch our very young team growing in strides.”
Southern Wayne is 3-10 in league openers since 2011.
The Saints (3-3 overall, 1-0 QCC) play host to Hunt on Friday. Game time is 6 p.m.
Baseball
Junior catcher Alex Ferrell went “yard” for the second time this season and finished 2-for-3 with an RBI on the day.
Tyler Odom (RBI), Jake Coates (RBI) and freshman center fielder Hayden Waller contributed two hits apiece. Cuyler Daly batted 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
Up 3-2 after four innings, the Saints gave right-hander Drew Sweet some breathing room with a four-run uprising in the fifth. They tacked on an additional run in the sixth.
The senior scattered five hits and notched four strikeouts during his complete-game effort on the bump.
Southern Wayne climbed to 6-10 in conference openers since 2008.
The Saints (6-0, 1-0) return home Friday to face Hunt. Game time is approximately 30 minutes after conclusion of the JV contest.
Girls’ soccer
Barrios collected goals on assists from Angelica Quinta and Amya Smith.
Aracely Perez doled out a goal-scoring assist to Quinta.
Smith posted seven saves in goal.
Southern Wayne (4-1-1, 1-0-0) returns home Thursday to face Hunt. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at the Bryan Multi-Sports Complex in Goldsboro.
