SMITHFIELD — Smithfield-Selma prevailed on two of three doubles courts during a nail-biting, 5-4 triumph over Quad County 3A boys’ tennis foe Smithfield-Selma on Monday afternoon.

The teams battled to a 3-3 tie after singles.

Saints junior Aaron Whiting dominated Spartans freshman Elijah Matthews 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Fifth-seeded Evin Williams posted the same result over sophomore Jamal Parson.

Sixth-seeded Matt Blizzard blanked SSS freshman Terance Smith 6-0, 6-0.

The tandem of Blizzard and sophomore Hudson Hulet stopped the Spartans’ duo of Matthews-Parson 8-1. Blizzard was named the team’s player-of-the-game by head coach David Van Dyke.

Southern Wayne (0-6 overall, 0-6 QCC) continues its three-game road swing at Fike on Wednesday.
